Moving Algarve: The Algarve is Portugal’s southernmost region and sits on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital city of the region is Faro, the historic and administrative centre. It has over 200 km of coastline, 85 blue flag beaches and over 300 days of sunshine per year. Some of the most well-known beaches include Portimao, Lagos and Albufeira among others.
The Algarve is split between Monchique, The Barrocal and the coastal areas and has around 400,000 permanent residents. It is heavily influenced by its history of Arab occupation which can be seen in the region’s architecture and place names. It has seen a surge in its expat population in recent years due to its warm climate, laid-back lifestyle, low-cost of living and stunning beaches.

Life in the Algarve for expats
The Algarve has a well-connected expat community with websites such as Expats Portugal, Hey Portugal, Moving to Portugal and others. When it comes to finding employment being able to speak Portuguese is very important as only around a third of the population can speak English. However, most expats work in the fields of tourism, hospitality, IT and education.
It is possible to lead a comfortable live in the Algarve on a medium budget, although the minimum wage is only around 740 euros a month. For expat families, The Portuguese have a free public education system and there is the Eupheus International School near Loulé.
