Moving to Indonesia | Emigrating to Indonesia

Moving to Indonesia: Indonesia is an extremely popular destination because of its beautiful islands, such as Bali, Sumatra and Borneo.

It is a well-known Southeast Asian country, which is popular not only with tourists but with a large number of expats from all over the world.

As a company, Kehrli & Oeler have already gained a great deal of experience assisting expats moves to Indonesia.

Indonesia offers a warm but pleasant climate, friendly people, fascinating landscapes, great cuisine and great living conditions on a moderate budget. These are some of the reasons why so many expatriates emigrate to Indonesia each year and why the numbers of expats increase year on year.

The Indonesian Language

Those who live in Indonesia and want to work should keep in mind that it always makes sense to learn the language of the newly adopted homeland. Although the English language is relatively widespread in Indonesia, Indonesian is clearly the official language.

Speaking the language will be advantageous for expats as it can facilitate many positive situations in every day and working life. It will definitely make life easier for expats, even just knowing it to a basic level.

Working in Indonesia

First and foremost, you can only get a job in Indonesia if the company can credibly prove that it tried to find a qualified Indonesian citizen first. It is advisable for expats wanting to move to Indonesia, to look for a job for a foreign company that is operating in this Southeast Asian country. This is possible, for example, by working in Switzerland for a company that is looking for people to relocate to Indonesia within their organisation. Alternatively, one can simply apply for companies that are currently looking for personnel in Indonesia.

Health & Education

Expats who decide to relocate to Indonesia should definitely sign up for foreign health insurance in advance. This will give them access to better medical treatment and mean that they don’t have to rely on the Indonesian social system. In general, foreign health insurance offers many advantages and is absolutely necessary to have in Indonesia, so you should not do without it.

With regards to the education system, the vast majority of expatriates choose to send their children to international schools and international universities, as they tend to be much better than the alternatives. International education can be found in many major Indonesian cities, most notably Jakarta, so finding one should not be a problem.

Cost of Living

The moderate cost of living in Indonesia is a major attraction for many expats wanting to choose this country as their new home. It is overall cheaper than the neighbouring countries of Singapore and Malaysia. Domestic products, in particular, are considerably cheaper than they are in Switzerland. However, there are products that are relatively expensive, such as alcoholic beverages, dairy products and certain imported goods.

Those who mainly source Indonesian products, especially foodstuffs, will soon notice that the cost of living in Indonesia is extremely moderate and that one can get by for long periods, on relatively little.

Climate

Since Indonesia is a relatively large country, the climate can be markedly different depending on where in the country you are. The north of the nation has a tropical humid climate, whereas the southern islands tend to experience more of a changeable, tropical monsoon climate. The further east in Indonesia you travel, the more the prevailing rainfall decreases. The Eastern part of the country is generally described as drier than the rest.

The monthly temperature fluctuations in Indonesia are pretty modest, so you can normally rely on pleasant, warm and sunny weather, throughout the year. The climate in Indonesia is certainly another important reason why more and more expats are choosing to move to Indonesia.
