Moving to Peru | Emigrating to Peru

Moving to Peru: Anyone who moves from Switzerland to Peru is certainly looking for an adventure. The South American country, which was formerly populated by the Incas, is very different from Switzerland.

Peru is a country that has so many positive aspects to offer expatriates such as the extraordinary nature, the extremely friendly, extroverted and open-minded people, the relaxed lifestyle and also the enchanting flora and fauna. There are so many activities to do outside of the cities due to the country’s variety, beauty and incredible elegance.

People that want to work in Peru should ideally have a job offer before reaching the country. It is recommended to seek out international companies as they offer significantly better pay than local businesses do.

A work permit is issued to expats only if they already have a permanent job in Peru, although this is also time-limited. Working life in Peru can generally be described as very hard and in order to be successful, one should master the Spanish language. This is necessary to understand what is going on when it comes to negotiations or meetings at work.

Alternatively, setting up your own business is an option that may be considered, with import/export businesses particularly thriving.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Peru, is of course, much lower than one is used to in Switzerland. This is an important factor to consider when deciding to emigrate to Peru.

Within South America, the living costs in Peru are in around the mid-range when comparing countries. However, the cost of certain goods varies by location, with major cities, such as Lima or Cusco, tending to be more expensive than the more rural areas.

Imported goods are often far more expensive than they are in their countries of origin, which is why you should mainly rely on domestic goods if costs are an issue for you.

Climate

The climate in Peru is very diverse. It is relatively dry on the Pacific coast with increasing rainfall the further north you go.

Those who prefer more temperate temperatures should think about moving to the south of Peru, where it is not particularly cold or hot for most of the year. This also applies to the capital, Lima, which is one of the most popular destinations for expats from around the world.

The Andes, as well as the rain forest regions of Peru, have different climatic conditions, which vary depending on the altitude. In the rain forest, east of the mountains, it is relatively mild with heavy rainfall.

Health & Education System

It is advisable for expatriates to take out private health insurance in Peru, since only private hospitals can stand up to the same standards people are used to in Europe.

Healthcare is generally not at a particularly good level, but people can gain access to better medical care if they get private medical insurance. If privately insured, expats in Peru can receive state-of-the-art health care.

In terms of the country’s education system, there are numerous international schools, mainly located in Lima, Arequipa and Cusco, which are particularly popular with expats. In addition, private universities are recommended because they tend to guarantee a better quality of education.

Language

As in most Spanish-speaking countries, it is essential in Peru to master the local language, at least to a decent level. This is because English is not as widespread in South and Central America as it is in other parts of the world. Being able to speak Spanish is basically a requirement when moving to Peru.

This not only facilitates communication in professional life but also with the locals. This can result in forming much faster friendships, which may otherwise be more difficult to achieve due to the prevailing language barrier.
