Moving to Paraguay | Emigrating to Paraguay

Moving to Paraguay: Paraguay is an extremely popular destination for expats from all over the world and is located in South America, where many German-speaking emigrants are to be found.

The fact that the country is so popular with expats is not surprising either, considering that the cost of living in Paraguay is extremely modest, the landscape is impressive, people are open and friendly, and the cosy atmosphere is great.

Due to the fact that there are many German-speaking expats, there are a wide range of service providers, doctors and institutions tailored to this minority, which is why Swiss expats should feel settled quickly. On top of this, the Paraguayan inhabitants of the country welcome foreigners with friendliness, openness and in an extroverted way.

Anyone who decides to move to Paraguay should at least have basic knowledge of Spanish, as the English level of the population is not particularly high. This is generally true across Latin America. So Spanish is almost a prerequisite for interacting with the people of the country and integrating into society.

Climate

The climate in Paraguay can be broadly divided into two different regions, with the tropical-influenced Gran Chaco being located in the west of the Rio Paraguay. This is where the rain falls between November and May.

East of the Rio Paraguay you will find the humid, subtropical region of Paranena, where it can be relatively cold from November to March and extremely cold from May to August. The temperatures can go as low as minus degrees. Between March and May, as well as October and November, the rain falls the most, with the precipitation in southern Paraguay relatively uniform.

Health & Education System

The health system is not the highest quality, with most expats choosing to take out private health insurance. This provides access to better medical care at a standard similar to what you would receive in Western Europe.

As far as the education system is concerned, most expats in Paraguay rely on private schools and universities, as these usually provide a better level of education. In addition, there are also numerous international schools, which are extremely popular with the expat community.

Working in Paraguay

Although it is relatively easy to obtain a residence permit in Paraguay, working is pretty difficult. This is because you have to speak perfect Spanish and have a good education to get a job which offers salaries at a European level.

That’s why Paraguay is especially popular with expats who are either financially independent, have other sources of income, or are simply self-employed, as there are not so many obstacles in their way. Another attractive feature for the self-employed in Paraguay is that taxes are not particularly high.

Paraguay is therefore recommended to immigrants who are not dependent on an employment relationship in the country but receive money from other sources, as it is not easy for expats to find a high-paying job. This is particularly true when Spanish is not mastered to a high level.

Cost of Living

The moderate cost of living, which is significantly lower to that in Switzerland is a considerable motivator for expats when deciding to move to Paraguay.

The low living costs are true when it comes to most goods, with the exception of imported goods which tend to be significantly more expensive than those produced in the country, with prices even higher than in Western Europe.

In general, one can say that people can live a more pleasant life in Paraguay than they can in Switzerland, on considerably less money. This is why the country is so popular with people who are already retired.
