Moving to Tunisia | Emigrating to Tunisia

Moving to Tunisia: Tunisia has been a hugely popular destination for tourists from all over the world for many years and is becoming increasingly popular with expats. This is partly due to the moderate cost of living, the beautiful beaches, the relaxed Tunisian lifestyle, as well as the great cuisine and interesting culture. The climate and the impressive natural landscapes are some of the reasons why people move to Tunisia.

Particularly popular destinations are the villages on the Tunisian coast, Hammamet, Sousse, Nabeul, Mahdia, Monastir, as well as Port El-Kantaoui. Accordingly, most of the expats can be found in these places which is why these areas are recommended for those who, after moving to Tunisia, is also interested in meeting other expats.

Working in Tunisia

Expats who want to work in Tunisia, in principle, need a work permit, whereby it must be proved that the respective enterprise couldn’t find a Tunisian citizen that could do the same job.

In general, it is advisable to consider predominantly international corporations when looking for a job, as these usually offer significantly better salaries than Tunisian companies.

Alternatively, setting up your own business is an option that can be extremely lucrative in Tunisia if you have a good idea, which then also adds value to the Tunisian economy.

Cost of living

The low cost of living in Tunisia is undoubtedly one of the main reasons why many expats move there, as they are extremely low, especially in comparison with Switzerland. This is why so many older expats retire there.

Anyone who is already financially secure can live a luxurious lifestyle in Tunisia and would have to spend significantly less money than they would in Switzerland.

The lower prices are true in nearly all situations, which, coupled with a relaxed life on the coast, often creates an image that encourages expats to move to Tunisia.

Health & Education System

In Tunisia, it is definitely advisable to take out private health insurance as it gives you access to better medical care. This is particularly important, as the health system in Tunisia is generally not comparable to those in European countries, which of course applies to state institutions.

Those who have private health insurance, however, have the opportunity to be treated in private medical facilities, which is definitely recommended for expats.

With regard to the education system, it is advisable to consider private schools and universities with an international setting, as these provide a better level of education than state institutions.

Language

Expats who want to move to Tunisia should be able to speak either Arabic or French, although English is not uncommon in the tourist areas. Those who want to be on the safe side should learn Arabic, as this is the national language. French is also spoken by a certain proportion of the population.

Of course, this will make everyday life in Tunisia a lot easier, as it means that you can talk to the locals and get along better in your professional life. Language skills in Arabic can be an extremely helpful skill, especially when dealing with the authorities.

Climate

The attractive climate is another reason why many expats are moving to Tunisia. It is a mixture of a Mediterranean and Arid climate, with mild temperatures year-round, making it never too cold.

In the summer, temperatures can sometimes reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, which is why it is better if you live in one of the many coastal towns of the country, as you can enjoy the sea breeze.
