Moving Porto | Emigrating to Porto
Moving Porto: Porto is a port city located along the Douro river in Northern Portugal. The second largest city in Portugal dates back thousands of years which can be seen in the ancient architecture throughout the city, especially in Ribiero do Porto. Porto is called by many as the “City of Bridges” due to its six iconic bridges and striking sea views. The city is famous around the world today for its port wine.
Porto has seen a tourist boom in recent years due to its long sandy beaches, history and architecture, food and wine and the rise in budget airlines. The “tripeiros”, as the locals are known as, are incredibly proud of their history and the city’s nickname ‘Invicta’ which means unconquered. There is a small but growing expat community in Porto and they enjoy the low-cost of living, hot summers and fascinating culture of the city.

Life in Porto for expats
A major benefit for expats in Porto is the English ability of the local people, especially hospitality staff, taxi drivers and the young. Portugal is one of the most affordable countries in Europe and the city of Porto is no exception. Accommodation, food and transport is far cheaper in Porto than most other places in Western Europe. Having said this, the salary for local jobs is on the low end with an average of around 800 Euros a month.
When it comes to finding employment, the main industries in Porto are in tourism, manufacturing, IT and start-up companies. The weather is ideal with long hot summers and mild winters. A one-bedroom apartment in the centre will cost around €500 a month and a decent meal around €5.
