Moving to Poland | Emigrating to Poland

Moving to Poland: Poland is an Eastern European country that may not be one of the first countries you think about when wanting to emigrate. But, Poland has a lot to offer: outstanding landscapes, moderate living costs, an interesting and diverse culture and a friendly, open and sociable people. These are some of the reasons why so many people worldwide decide to move to Poland every year.

Poland, along with Switzerland, Austria and the United States, is one of the most popular countries to emigrate to for German citizens. Moving to Poland is no longer a rarity, as the country is booming and becoming more and more attractive to expats from around the world.

The country has a temperate transitional climate, with the western and eastern regions of the country designated as zones with a maritime climate with Atlantic influences. This, in turn, means that the summers in these regions of Poland are relatively humid and mild, while the winters are also humid but not too cold.

In the East, however, the situation is such that the summers are much hotter and drier and the winters colder and snowier. This should be considered when deciding to choose a future residence in Poland, as the weather can be an important factor for many expats when deciding on a location.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Poland is generally lower than most Central European countries, with certain products, such as clothing and fuel, being exceptions. In general, however, it can be said that living in Poland, especially if you are from Switzerland, is another world in terms of the cost of living as it is so much cheaper. If you have decent financial resources then you can live a very luxurious life in Poland.

The prices in Poland are significantly lower than they are in Switzerland, which is an important argument in favour of moving as an expat.

Health & Education System

Anyone that decides to move to Poland should definitely take out private health insurance, as they are not particularly expensive and they provide a high level of service with significantly shorter waiting times. Poland has a very modern and professional health care system, which is accessible through private insurances.

In terms of education, Poland has a very high standard, which is particularly interesting for those expats that move with the whole family.

Working in Poland

In Poland, there are plenty of jobs to be found, provided the job seeker has a good or high level of education. It can be easier finding employment if the search takes place in Poland itself. It is of course also possible to gain a position in Poland through international companies, with internships being of particular interest to younger people. They often provide a good start into the Polish working life.

Doctors, nurses, construction workers, engineers, as well as commercial specialists are increasingly in demand. But even in other sectors and occupational fields, it is relatively easy, especially as an expat, to find a suitable job. In general, of course, you have to expect that you will receive lower wages in Poland than you would in Switzerland. However, this is largely dependent on whether you work for an international or a Polish company, and in which industry and position you are working in.

Anyone wishing to stay longer than 3 months in Poland is also required to register for residence. Due to the fact that Switzerland belongs to the European Economic Area (EEA), Swiss citizens do not need a work permit in Poland and can thus enter the labour market directly.

Poland offers great opportunities for expats, particularly in the professional field, as the country is experiencing an economic boom and a prosperous economy compared to other Eastern European countries.

The Polish Language

When moving to Poland you should always keep in mind that language is a significant aspect to life there. Speaking the Polish language will greatly improve your general life in the country. This applies both to social life, the professional sector, and when in contact with public authorities. The ability to speak English is relatively common in Poland especially when it comes to the younger population.

However, Polish language proficiency is very important if you want to integrate into the society of the country, which is why it is definitely recommended to have at least a basic level in the language before moving to Poland.
