Moving to Hungary | Emigrating to Hungary
Moving to Hungary: Every year, Hungary attracts many expats from all over the world who decide to move to the East European country. One of the reasons is that the country has one of the lowest costs of living in Europe, with rents particularly low.
It also has a rich culture with a long and interesting history and due to its relatively central location, is a good base to travel around Europe from.
Most Swiss expats go to Budapest, as the city has many attractions, a great nightlife, a good infrastructure and a high level of education. Language
Anyone that plans to live in Hungary should definitely remember to learn the language, as it will be beneficial if you want to find your way around Hungary in the long term and participate in everyday life.
Although Hungarian is a relatively difficult language, there are many opportunities to learn this beautiful language in most European countries and in Hungary itself. Ideally, expats should be able to speak the language to a basic level before moving to Hungary.
Cost of Living
As we have mentioned before, a major advantage of moving to Hungary is that the cost of living is very low. This is most noticeable when you leave the capital Budapest and travel to other cities or rural areas.
In general, travelling within the country is on the whole cheap, convenient and straightforward, as both the public network is well developed and reasonably priced. Also, fuel prices are cheaper than in other European countries. However, road conditions are not as good as they are in Switzerland.
Working in Hungary
When it comes to career opportunities, a major positive is that there are many German companies active in Hungary as the labour costs are so low, especially in comparison with Germany or Switzerland. Expats from Switzerland should definitely look for a job at one of the German or international companies since you would receive a salary much higher than you would at a Hungarian company. If you have achieved a good level of education or had relevant work experience, you will have good career prospects in Hungary.
Doctors, engineers, logisticians and executives in various sectors are, particularly in demand. Also, there are numerous job opportunities in the tourism sector, especially during the high season.
Wages in Hungary are generally relatively low. However, with appropriate training and experience, especially as an expat, one can find good positions in international companies that pay wages at a Western European level.
Anyone wishing to start a business in Hungary will be pleased to know that only 10% of the company tax has to be paid in the country, which should be of particular interest to entrepreneurs.
