Moving to Greece | Emigrating to Greece

Moving to Greece: Greece is a South-Eastern European country that has a rich culture, beautiful landscapes, a mild climate and a relaxed lifestyle. Therefore, it is not surprising that so many people worldwide decide to emigrate to Greece every year.

The country’s attractiveness is reflected in the fact that it is one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Just one of the reasons for this is the multitude of fascinating islands, which can only be described as outstandingly beautiful.

A deciding factor for many expats that are moving to Greece is that the climate is extremely pleasant, mild and attractive. That is one of the reasons why Greece is visited annually by millions of tourists from all over the world.

The climate can be described as Mediterranean, which means that the country has mild winters and hot, dry summers. Surprisingly, snowfall also occurs, even if it is limited exclusively to the mountainous regions of the mainland.

The Greek Language

In Greece, of course, Greek is predominantly spoken, which is why it is recommended that you learn the language, at least to a basic level, before moving to Greece.

Although English is relatively widespread, especially among the younger population, it is not a language that can be used adequately in everyday or professional life. Learning the language, naturally, facilitates contact with the local population, which in turn means that it is easier to make new friends and integrate into Greek culture.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Greece is generally higher than many expect and varies a lot depending on the products and services. Fruits and vegetables, for example, are cheaper than in Central Europe but real estate prices are almost similar to those in countries such as Germany, France or Spain.

In general, life in the countryside is pretty cheap, whereas life on one of the well-known islands will be considerably higher, just like any other tourist hotspot. On average, however, the cost of living is about 30% higher then the European average, with wages generally lower than in other European countries.

Working in Greece

It can often be very difficult to find work in Greece, as a large number of vacancies are filled through contacts and the country generally suffers from relatively high unemployment. However, there are always opportunities, even for expats, to find a job and the OEAD (Greek Institute for Employment) can help. The best chances of getting a job are in the tourism industry, as well as in the IT sector and in craft trades.

A good route to go down would be with the numerous international companies operating in Greece, which often make it possible to find work before moving to Greece. People who would like to emigrate from Switzerland to Greece should, therefore, do some research about the different job possibilities, before moving to Greece.

Legal framework conditions regarding employment contracts exist only marginally in Greece, which is why you should pay close attention to the details when signing a contract, so that you can ultimately be satisfied with the agreement.
