Moving to Udon Thani: Udon Thani is the capital of the north-eastern province of the same name, Udon Thani. With around 160,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in Thailand and is of great importance for trade with Laos, whose border is only around 60km away.
The most notable attractions are the UNESCO Ban Chiang archaeological site and probably the most romantic place in Thailand, Talay Bua Daeng (Red Lotus Lake).
Udon is part of the largest region of Thailand known as Isaan that has many different cities, distinctive ethnic groups, separate dialects and is predominantly agriculturally based. The people are some of the warmest and friendliest in Thailand and as a westerner, you will be repeatedly stopped for a chat and welcomed into people’s homes for some food.
