Working in Malaysia
Those expats who want to work in Malaysia will be pleased with the emerging economy, which offers a large number of opportunities for well-educated migrants from all over the world.
The unemployment rate in Malaysia is generally very low, with many opportunities in the IT, communication, tourism and hospitality sectors. Malaysia generally has a large number of jobs to offer, and these are also very popular with international applicants. The easiest way, of course, is to work for your current company in Malaysia, as this also tends to simplify the formalities.
The country lacks well-educated professionals, which is why Swiss expats should take a good look at Malaysia, as there are countless openings for interesting careers in this fascinating Southeast Asian country.
Cost of Living
An important aspect that is encouraging people to move to Malaysia is that the cost of living is extremely moderate, particularly when it comes to fruit and vegetables.
However, there are slightly higher prices for drinks, dairy products and imported goods, although the prices are of course not nearly as high as those in Switzerland.
The low cost of living allows expats that earn a salary similar to Western Europe to live a very comfortable life. So if you are financially secure, you can achieve much more than would be possible in Switzerland on the same money.
Health & Education System
The health and educational system of the country is extremely high quality, which is why you absolutely do not have to worry about this. The quality of the health system is evident by the fact that medical tourism in Malaysia is an important industry, with countless tourists from all over the world entering the country each year to undergo medical treatment.
However, health care is much better in large cities than it is in the rural areas, which is one of the reasons why most expats decide to live in places such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang Island, Kuching, Malacca, Kota Kinabalu, Johor Baruh or even Ipoh. Private health insurance, although there is a governmental option, is definitely recommended to have in order to receive the best possible medical care.
There are also many positive things to say about the education system in Malaysia, which is particularly interesting for those that want to study in Malaysia or have a family with children that needs to go to school or university in the country. There is a wide choice of international schools that are popular with expats, especially in the big cities.

Climate
Malaysia is a country where the climate is basically the same all year round, with relatively similar temperatures. The climate in this south-east Asian country can be described as an ‘evergreen, tropical rainforest climate’.
In Malaysia there is also a dry and rainy season with the only exceptions, in terms of climate, being on the border with Thailand, as well as in the northwest of Borneo, where you can find different climatic conditions.
Temperatures in Malaysia are mostly between about 20 and 35 degrees Celsius throughout the year, making it an attractive feature of the country and why many expats make the move there.
Language
In Malaysia, English is the official second language, which means that you can communicate widely in this language. This is especially true for the more educated and for people living in big cities.
Nevertheless, it may be useful to learn the main language Malay, as it will allow you to immerse yourself deeper into the culture of the country and to communicate with a larger pool of people.
There are many advantages to mastering Malay, so it can definitely be recommended to acquire at least a basic level in this language.
