Why not move to the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic combines beautiful sandy beaches with a tropical climate and beautiful nature. Expats who are moving to this wonderful nation usually opt to live in gated communities, as it offers increased security and many further benefits for expats from the West. They usually have international supermarket chains and restaurants and even multicultural kindergartens and schools.
Expats in the Dominican Republic
Most expats live in the capital city of Santa Domingo, although other cities such as Sosua, Luperon, Barahona or Casa de Campo are also popular.
In general, you will be particularly happy in the Dominican Republic if you want a quieter, more relaxed and comfortable way of life, because time on this paradise island just runs slower than Western countries. In order to really settle down in the Dominican Republic, it is definitely advisable to learn Spanish, as this is the official language of the country and the ability to speak it will make everyday life much easier. In addition to this, you will be able to better participate in the country’s interesting and vibrant culture and build friendships with the locals. This is generally very easy as Dominican people are always very welcoming, open and friendly.
The Dominican Republic is a very attractive country to move to and gives you the chance to live life the way you want. However, as the country is generally not very rich, it is advisable to only consider moving if you have a good job or decent financial resources. This is because you will, at some point, need to use private institutions such as kindergartens, schools, universities and health care facilities. You will want to live a pleasant and beautiful life, but at the same time, not renounce all western standards.
Many other German-speaking expats are present especially in the north of the country, between Puerto Plata and Cabarete, most of which live in Sosua. The Dominican Republic is also known for its exceptionally great coffee, which is one of the country’s major export commodities along with sugar and bananas.
