Moving to Cuba | Emigrating to Cuba

Moving to Cuba: Cuba is a country known mainly for communism, Fidel Castro, cigars and Che Guevara, but the country has much more to offer than this. It has a year-round tropical climate, outstanding beaches and the azure seas.

Moreover, it is worth mentioning the extroverted Cubans themselves, who quickly ensure, because of their fiery temperament, that even newly arrived expats feel welcome, with a cigar in their mouth and a glass of rum in their hand. If you ever find yourself in a Cuban bar, you should perhaps join the local population in the dance area, as it will be an experience you won’t forget.

In Cuba, the atmosphere is generally very relaxed, with the cost of living being relatively low, which is extremely important to many expats from around the world.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Cuba is relatively modest which means that expats who are moving from, for example, Switzerland to Cuba, will notice that with similar amounts of money, one will have much stronger purchasing power.

Of course, this is often a deciding factor for many tourists to make the move, as it allows for a more relaxed, enjoyable and in many cases a more luxurious life than is possible in their home countries.

However, the low costs do not apply to all goods, as imported goods are often quite expensive, which is why you should stick to local products as far as possible.

Property

It is particularly important for expats to find suitable property when moving to Cuba, as you want to feel comfortable and at home.

In Cuba, however, foreigners are not allowed to buy real estate, so the possibilities are somewhat limited. Nevertheless, real estate can be rented from various state-owned real estate companies or from locals that have the corresponding license.

This is at least the official version: For some years, however, it has been possible for foreigners to buy real estate, which requires contact with a Cuban citizen that takes over the purchase for them. The other possibility for foreigners to acquire real estate is by marrying a Cuban citizen.

Working in Cuba

Expats who would like to work in Cuba need either a temporary or permanent residence permit. Anyone who works for or may have been sent by a foreign company needs a temporary residence permit, which is usually valid for about one year and then either expires or can be extended.

If someone decides to work for a state enterprise, then an indefinite residence permit is necessary, whereby one pays only around 20 to 30 euros monthly, since the local currency has a very miserable exchange rate.

For expats who have decided to work in Cuba, it is most advisable to look for a job within foreign corporations, as they pay acceptable to high salaries, which affords people a particularly luxurious life.

Language

Those who decide to move to Cuba should speak Spanish to a good level, as English is not very widespread on the island nation. Without knowledge of the Spanish language, it will be difficult to speak to most inhabitants and in turn will make it hard to immerse yourself in the country’s rich culture.
