Expats who wish to work in Mauritius must first overcome certain challenges, such as the need to find an employer willing to apply for a “work permit”, which then has to pay a fixed minimum monthly sum, which is why it can often be difficult to find a job in Mauritius.
Another possibility is starting a business, where a certain minimum turnover per year must be achieved. Investments, which also have to achieve a fixed minimum return, are a way to earn money in Mauritius and stay here in the long term.
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Mauritius tends to be somewhat similar to that in Western Europe. But, there can sometimes be drastic differences, for example between supermarkets and local markets, which offer significantly cheaper goods.
Expatriates from Switzerland, however, will quickly notice that the cost of living is significantly more moderate than is true in Switzerland. In Mauritius, it is possible to realise different lifestyles, ranging from one with a relatively low cost of living to one with an extremely luxurious standard of living.
Language
Expats who decide to move to Mauritius should be able to speak English and French, as both languages are very important in order to participate in everyday life. Additionally, it will also allow you to immerse yourself in the culture, which in turn means that you can generally find your way around Mauritius more easily.

Health & Education System
Mauritius has a decent health system and free medical care is provided for locals and foreigners with a residence permit. Expats should, however, be sure to take out private health insurance as it will allow them to access better medical care. Private health insurance will mean much shorter waiting times and generally better quality care.
The majority of the expats who move to Mauritius send their children to private educational institutions, as this tends to offer a better level of education.
